It took us approx 3 hours (210km) to get to the entrance of Jerangkang waterfall in Maran, Pahang. We then, hopped onto the back of a lorry for the remainder 16km ride to the waterfall. The road was horrendous and it was quite a ride, my back still hurts from the bumpy 30min ride, something that I’ve never tried before, and am not too keen on trying again…
The lorry driver told us, there are over 20 waterfalls in Jerangkang fall. The first fall was easy to find, a soft trek of 10min. And we went to the next and next and next. And it got harder and harder.
We came to our 2nd last waterfall, and Kam Fai went ahead of us, a true boyscout, to check the safety of the path. It took him a long while, we waited and waited. Then, we decided to look for him, worried something might have happened. The girls decided to stay back and enjoy the cooling waters while I joined the boyz for our last hike up.
Truly, the last portion of the trek was the toughest. We bumped into Kam Fai half way up. Glad he’s alright. It took him longer coz the trek was longer and more uphill. There were ropes tied to trees to assist us down the steep terrain to the last waterfall. The view was ordinary when we first reached it. All this hard work for this???
But when we waded across the pool to the rocks, we finally saw the whole view. 3 falls cascading down from the top, one after the other… wow, it was quite an awesome sight! My pictures couldn’t do justice to the actual feeling of being there itself. Definitely worth the dreadful lorry ride and the tiring trek up. I didn’t feel like leaving the fall at all, but since it was already 5pm, we had no choice but to start our descend.
We had dinner in Sri Jaya and then headed home on Karak Highway. We reached PJ around 11.15pm. What a long day…. but well worth the journey, it was truly a magnificent waterfall, the best I’ve seen so far…

Kemensah Waterfall/ Sg Ampang Fall
|
|
Yup, 2 weeks in a row, trekking for waterfalls. This weekend, we went to Kemansah Kampung, literally behind the Zoo Negara. The trek to the first waterfall took approximately an hour, relatively easy. We were there for about 15 minutes. The uphill climb back to the junction b/w the 1st and 2nd waterfall took a little bit more work. We decided to head on to the 2nd waterfall. At this juncture, it will be a brand new trek for all of as, since Terence has only been to the first waterfall via the new path. We headed up and up and up, thinking that the 2nd & 3rd waterfall is there.
And we passed by a red marker on our right, showing a tiny hollow path down a steep slope. We decided against our better judgment and head forward instead. We trekked another hour at least, of solid uphill climb, that made us gasp for air as we climb. The trek reminds me of my trek up Mt Kinabalu and i made a mental note to inform friends to come here should they wish to train for Mt Kinabalu. Kam Fai sprinted ahead of us, hoping to hear some sound of gushing water to indicate the fall is nearby, but, no sound of water can be heard. And the trail seems never ending uphill.
I reckon I might have sweat a bucket full before we decided that maybe we should quit and return back to the red marker. We arrived at the red marker, tired. I was relieved, can't wait to soak my feet into the water, to soothe the leaches' bites.
But, before we can reach the 2nd waterfall, an arduos task lay ahead. We must carefully thread the steep slope down to the waterfall. I was thanking God again and again, that it was divine intervention that my bro didn't come along. This would prove virtually impossible for his clumsy feet...
It took a while for all 5 of us to reach the 2nd fall, looking for where our next step will be, and grabbing nearby trees for support.
It was great to finally reach the fall, i was hungry and in need of some carbo!!! We spent an hour relaxing there, having the place all to ourselves. The water was cooling to our body and the sounds of birds singing to our tired spirit.
I dread the thot of going home, because the climb up the slope would be another trying task to endure. But suprisingly, it was easier climbing up that going down. I guess it was harder trying to stop myself from slipping down the slope when gravity is also pushing me down, than pushing myself up the slope.
Only when we reached home, did we find out that we missed the 3rd fall which is in between the first and the last fall we went to. And the fall we missed, is the cascading fall, which is the nicest of them all... Geez, it's beckoning me to come again....
I was thinking to myself, i can go Chilling waterfall again and again coz it's was such a nice soft trek, but i don't think i will go to Kemansah again, but now that my tiredness is gone, I think I might just go again, coz I've yet to reach the cascading waterfall, at least next time, i will go prepared...

Chilling Waterfall, KKB
|
|
We met at Friendster at 8am and as usual, the organizer, Terence was late. We stopped by 7-11 to buy some last minute snacks before heading off to Kuala Kubu Baru. There were 3 cars and 1 organiser bike. The journey was uneventful, we passed by the Lafarge Rawang plant on the way to KKB. Everyone was excited and adrenalins were pumped. It was an hour journey.
There was a short briefing session before we start our trek at 10.15am. Not far into the trek, we already saw our first mini waterfall, to spur us on! The trek was not taxing. There were butterflies and dragonflies here n there, so truly this is nature unspoiled, at its best, encouraging us on.
The adventurous part was the crossing of the river. We came to our first crossing and that seems easy enough. We crossed without much dramas. The 2nd crossing came a good 30 minutes after, the current was slightly stronger. Yen attempted to cross but slipped and fell, from the slippery rocks. Terence came to the rescue with the ropes. So, from the 2nd crossing onwards, we used the ropes as support to guide us thro the next 5 river crossings. The last crossing was the deepest, coming up to waist deep. I guess we don’t fear getting wet as much as fearing for our digital cameras getting soaked, in the process.
We had 2 rest stops to munch and energize. After 2.5 hours, we finally hear the sound of waterfalls from a distant and before long, the waterfall was at sight. Truly magnificent! It was an awesome sight! My brother was especially relieved, that his many tumbles were well worth it.
The water was freezing to our skin but once we’re fully immersed in the water, it became cooling to our spirit. We had lunch and relaxed for an hour before a huge group of young cub scouts arrived with shouts of glee. Yeap, they found the waterfalls too, and before long, we can see the eager youngsters swimming and climbing up the rocks to jump into the waters…. They were so carefree it made us looked foolish that we seemed so vary and careful. Haha.
We started our trek back at 2.40pm and arrived at our cars at 4.30pm. We’ve gotten better at our river crossings after seeing how the youngsters wading through the river. We don’t even use ropes anymore, haha.
It was a beautiful day and we had a wonderful time.

Pulau Ketam
|
|
We went to Pulau Ketam on Saturday. Contrary to most beliefs, it is quite far, yah. It took us almost 2 hours to get there from PJ. We departed Seapark around 9.15am. We reached Port KLang at 10-ish. The speedboat took off at 10.15am and we reached Pulau Ketam close to 11am.
Though the clouds showed signs of rain, it turned out to be a hot day.... Pulau Ketam is a small fishing village. Only made up of 3 roads, Jalan Satu, Dua and Tiga. Means of transportation is via bicycles and motorbikes. Apparently this is one of the rare places in Malaysia for us to see 'moped' and electric scooter in action! Apparently it is also illegal to ride it without a licence....?
There were a number of seafood restaurants around, trying to earn extra $$$ from tourists like myself. The food is not very much cheaper than in PJ and not that delicious either, except for the fishballs, which figures, coz it's a fishing village.
And it was dissappointing as well to see the amount of trash that was thrown everywhere...

Trip to Zoo Negara
|
|
It was a hot HOT day. Thank goodness Larry's sis got the good sense to suggest we go to the zoo in the morning instead of the afternoon.
Suprisingly, the zoo was not as big as I expected it to be. Feels that the Taiping Zoo might be more enjoyable, but maybe it was so coz i was just a kid the last time i was there. But nevertheless, I got a chance to see my favourite giraffe upclose n personal... they're soooo adorable! That was the first place we went to, when we entered the zoo!
Vanessa was eager to see the king of the jungle, but to her dissappointment..... We found out that lions spend 90% of their time sleeping! No wonder...
And Mich went to conquer her fears in the Reptile's section. And i forgot to capture the python on camera to show the sheer size of those belly....!
Another interesting animal was the capybara. It's from the rodent family. Do you know, it's the biggest roddent in the world???!!! They were so cute, dipping themselves in the pool of water to keep cool.
And then, there's the bears... Caught one posing for the camera!
Shawn was also having his try at photography... There's a budding photographer at work. I was waiting soooo long 4 him to take a shot of me, that by the time he was ready, i looked away already... I prefer to be behind the lense than in front of it, so, you must be quick next time, Shawn!
Took a few more group pixs and found out KayLen (i'm bad with spelling names!) was camera shy, and Larry was doing very well in his daddy-training-session from babysitting his nieces n nephew!
We didn't stay long in the zoo, it was hot, hot, hot! After having lunch in Marrybrown, we took a stroll back to the entrance of the zoo and say bye-bye...

Kota Kinabalu, Sabah
|
|
We were in Kota Kinabalu for a week. My first time to Sabah. It took 2.5 hours on the Airasia flight from KL. Weather was good on Friday afternoon 13 May 2006. We bumped into a group of 17 who were also going for the Mt.Kinabalu climb. One of them is Shawn’s colik while another is my company’s auditor! Small world, in deed. Their climb's on Sunday whereas our's on Tuesday.
On Saturday, we went to Monsopiad Village, about 25 minutes from KK city. It’s the village where the Kadazan warrior called Monsopiad lived. We tried their rice wine and learnt their cultural dances. And how to dry skulls too…. They happened to be making local cuisine called hivana when we were around, so had a chance to taste it, very yummy, made of raw ‘ikan tenggiri’ mixed with ginger, lime & onions.
Bro’s local Sabahan friends took us to Gayang restaurant for some local seafood, which is actually quite far from KK city, reminds me of the Port Klang seafood restaurants. On the way we stopped by at Nexus Karambunai hotel, which boasts of beautiful soft sandy beach…
And yup, the seafood were quite reasonably priced, especially the oysters…it’s at half the price of oysters in KL…. Should have eaten more!
Sunday was spent at the island (Mamutik & Manukan islands) in Tunku Abd Rahman marine park. No pixs available as yours truly was busy snorkeling away… It wasn’t the best of days to be snorkeling, the sea was choppy, pre-Chanchu typhoon. It was about 40knots. Couldn’t believe that we actually went snorkeling in that weather! But having said that, we did manage to catch sight of some fishes – clown fish, dory, parrot fish, blue spotted stingray, sea cucumber and a whole load of other fishes that I am clueless of their names… It would have been lovelier if the sea was calmer.
Came back to the hotel smelling of the sea and a dozen sandfly bites! Boy, were they itchy! And the marks are still on my body up to today, heard it won’t go off until 2 weeks later!
We packed our bags early Monday and headed to Kinabalu Park. It was a 2 hour journey frm KK city. The foot of Mt Kinabalu was already 5,000 above sea level, so it was a cool climate. The summit will be 13k feet abv sea level. We went to the botanical gardens, learnt loads but can only remember a fraction. There’s a few hundred types of orchids here and some of the orchids here looked so different from what I known them to look like. And there were different kinds of nephentes too…the big, the fat, the tiny and the colorful ones. And ferns… Any nature lovers will find Kinabalu park a haven! In fact, we saw all these flowers during our Mt Kinabalu climb, thanks to the nature lovers along the way, who stopped us and pointed it out. Thanks to them, we realize that the climb is only half complete if we were too focused on reaching the top and fail to admire the beauty around us.
We started our journey to Mt Kinabalu at 9.30am Tuesday after a good rest on Monday. It was a 6km hike to Laban Rata, our rest point for the night. 6km didn’t seem like a biggie at the start. But, I was soon proven wrong. It took an average 1 hour to climb each kilometer and it gets harder with each climb.
The 6km hike mainly made up of 90% of hike and occasional flat grounds to spur us on. I was doing fine until I reached the 4km mark. My legs were tired, I was panting and it didn’t seem all that grand an idea anymore, about reaching the summit of Mt Kinabalu. I didn’t feel like taking my camera outta its bag to click away anymore too… All energy was concentrated at going the extra step. And then, tik, tik, tik… that cannot be the raindrops, could it??? Oh nooo, God, make it stop, make it stop… We were scrambling to the next shelter at 5km pitstop when it started to rain.
I was praying so hard for the rain to stop. We were 1km away from Laban Rata resthouse! My brother said, he ain’t leaving the shelter until the rain stops. But our mountain guide spurred us on by saying that we’ll be sitting at the shelter till nightfall if we don’t get our ass moving! And climb we did, rain n all… But surprisingly, it wasn’t all that bad, coz it was so cold, I couldn’t feel the tiredness of my legs and after a while it was refreshing. Hmmnn, maybe I was the only one that find it so, coz my feet were dry (boot was water resistant) while the rest were walking with wet feet in their shoes.
The rain stopped 40 minutes later. The numerous times that I asked myself, who’s grand idea was it to climb Mt Kinabalu became a distant memory when I saw the tip of the Laban Rata Resthouse, from afar. A much needed rest, is at bay.
When we opened the door to the restaurant at Laban Rata, not only did warmth greet us, cheers and applause came from a bunch of ladies from DUMC too, who reached earlier! That was like water to the thirsty, for our spirit!
I, who feared altitude sickness, was told that any old migraines will come back during our climb and I’m afraid it rang true. My migraine, slowly but surely, crept in, as the night wears on. As much panadols and migraine tablets I popped into my system, the migraine continue to show its ugliness in my head. My counterparts were not fairing too well either. My brother and Shawn were down with fever. We groggily woke up when my alarm went off at 1.45am. Not to be defeated, we got ourselves ready for our climb to the summit to see the sunrise. We are going to the summit, no migraine or fever is gonna stop us!
But alas, it was mother nature that stopped us. 45 minutes into the pitch dark climb, it started to rain yet again. And gradually got worse, thunders and lightning… We can hear the sound of gushing water, like waterfalls though no waterfalls were nearby. The mountain guide leader stopped the climb, it has gotten too dangerous, waterfall-like at the summit. And down, we descend, with a broken spirit. It is not to be…
We rested and flew back to KL on Thursday evening, leaving beautiful sunset at our tail....
Dissappointed but not defeated, we plan to attempt the climb to summit again in 2007.

Matt's BBQ Send-Off.
|
|
After the downpour on Friday night, we were all geared for a beautiful sunny Saturday, all set for the bbq! Five of us treasure hunters stormed OneU at 3.30pm looking for the ingredients. We hv chicken, corns, salad, drinks, potatoes… All set to pay? Aiks! We don’t have a working stove to boil the potatoes, Terence?! Okie, throw them outta the cart! No mashed potatoes then…
Preparation of food was easy, nothing to boil or mashed. We laze around until 6pm before starting the food preparation. Chris was busy training his virtual dog to obey his command… Sit, Spike, sit!!!
The first firestarter team went to the bbq pit at 6.30pm, but hey, what happened? It’s 7.30pm and no bbq chicken in sight?? It’s coming, it’s coming…
By 10pm, we know we cannot finish the food, guess who God brought over to help us? The RGBC team! Thou shall not waste!
Back to the condo, for blessing time! 9 fruits of the HS = 9 fruits for Matt! Lucky you Matt, that it’s not 9 LOCAL fruits (else u’ll be getting fruits like durian, jackfruit, langsat into the blender, yummy!).
We played UNO tower after the cleanup, when most hv decided to call it a night. Fun, fun, fun or stress, stress, stress?
I had a wonderful time, and I’m sure most did too. We’ll miss you Matt!

Genting Highlands
|
|
Two of us went up to Genting Highlands over the weekend. It was a refuge from the haze that so badly affected the Klang valley. The last time I’ve been up to GH was about 10 years ago, with my group of university friends. Never realize it has been so long….
Things have changed somewhat. Nothing seems to be free anymore. I remember we used to be able to walk along the lake and relax there, but it has been converted into an outdoor theme park and you’re required to purchase a ticket before allowed in. I don’t gamble, so no going to the casino, I didn’t feel like going for rides either, so the theme park is out as well. I was looking for some flowers to take shots of, but it’s all concretes that I see. I should be thrilled, since I work with a cement company, isn’t it?
Saturday was spent walking around and reminiscing the more carefree time once upon a time ago…. Geez, I’m sounding like an old fart! It was good just breathing in some fresh cool air. A nice change from the heat of the Klang valley and the hustle and bustle of city life.
They still have Marrybrown in GH. Couldn’t remember how it tasted like, so we tried it for dinner. It was a quiet Saturday.
Sunday was a photo outing. We were not about to give up on GH, so we went hunting for flowers. Our efforts were not put to waste. Not too many flowers around, but we still managed to get a couple of nice shots.
Then we proceed to the Mushroom Farm. We have forgotten that mushrooms are actually a type of fungus?! The “farm” was cool, damp and dark. They had a few varieties of mushrooms, lingzhi, oyster, monkey, etc… It was our first time taking shots of mushrooms, and boy was it difficult to get the right macro focus on these babies… And I’m proud to say, the pixs didn’t come out all that bad either! I like it! So that made my trip up to GH worth the while. It made my day!

Port Dickson 11-12 June 2005
|
|
We booked my company's condo and stayed over the night at PD. When the clock strike 6 in the evening, we were all geared with cams & tripod, all ready for the sunset.... and ain't it beautiful??? The weather was great, the sunset was amazing! Magnificent! But, most of us watched it thro the camera lense! Grins, with the exception of Shaun, who was fast asleep in the condo. See what u missed out on, Shaun?
All in all, a wonderful time in PD, hope to go again soon, this time will watch the sunset instead of busy capturing it with my cam.....
